Sr. Scientist, AAV Gene Therapy at CODA Biotherapeutics

CODA Biotherapeutics is an early-stage venture backed biotechnology company located in South San Francisco, California using innovative gene therapy approaches to treat intractable neurological diseases.


We are looking for an individual with expertise in AAV vector production. This role would support company-wide research-grade AAV vector production for early preclinical gene therapy studies for neuropathic pain and focal epilepsy using the chemogenetics platform. The role would include a diverse set of responsibilities in a team setting and would let the individual take part in discovery and development, and thereby bring next-generation, transformative gene therapies to our patients with debilitating disorders.


Applicants are required to be highly motivated and passionate to work in a fast-paced, start-up environment, be a team player with a master’s degree in life sciences. Experience in an industry-setting is highly desired, but not required. Candidate must have the highest level of scientific integrity to generate CODA’s gene therapy products.

Primary Responsibilities

▸ Help design and set up of a vector core laboratory

▸ Produce research-grade AAV vectors using the HEK293 system– cell stacks, cell factories, small bioreactors

▸ Maintain production cell lines and their inventory

▸ Set up and manage helper plasmids and AAV vectors inventories

▸ Co-ordinate production needs with different teams and manage supply chain

▸ Interface with vector production companies and eventually help with process development at CDMO

Education, Experience, & Skills Requirements

▸ Bachelors’ required; Master’s degree preferred.

▸ 2+ years of experience required either in academic setting or industry (preferred).

Experience is running a vector core.

▸ Hands-on experience to produce research-grade AAV vectors using the 293 system. Knowledge of baculovirus or other production systems is a plus.

▸ Demonstrated skills in sterile tissue culture techniques including, transfection, transduction, develop and maintain cell lines and their inventory.

▸ Ability to be proactive in managing inventory of supplies, ordering reagents and consumables.

▸ Background and understanding of AAV biology as well as gene therapy are highly desirable.


Also, qualified candidates should:

▸ Be proficient in MS Office, SnapGene (or similar cloning software)

▸ Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills

▸ Have ability to work independently or collaboratively; and eventually train and manage a small team in-house and interface with external manufacturers

▸ Be well-organized and detailed-oriented with ability to juggle multiple tasks and work in a fast-paced environment
