Vice President, Business Development at Achaogen

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President of Business Development will have overall responsibility for identifying, evaluating, negotiating and securing strategic business opportunities that further the overall corporate strategy.



Essential Functions:

Lead, develop and communicate the business development vision, strategic direction, and resource requirements for the company.
Responsible for identifying and evaluating strategic business opportunities: out-licensing and in-licensing opportunities, partnerships, mergers, acquisitions, alliances and/or joint ventures on a global basis.
Lead the overall effort to find global partners for lead antibacterial program in late phase 3 development.
Partner with the executive leadership team in contributing to development of long-term corporate strategy.
Structure and negotiate to completion a variety of transactions to support corporate objectives.
Lead teams in scientific due diligence, coordinating efforts of internal team and external support as needed.
Represent the Company externally on relevant corporate matters with key stakeholders.
Prepare and present to senior leadership and the board of directors the strategic rationale and financial justification for potential partnerships (includes ability to build financial models to support terms).
Work cross functionally to secure required resources for successful transaction implementation.
Establish key business development interfaces with Commercial, Research, Clinical, Regulatory, Finance.
Develop and manage annual operating budgets.
Prepare management reports, metrics, presentations, KPI’s sufficient to communicate and measure functional area performance.
Select, develop and evaluate team members to ensure the effective operation of the function.


Preferred Experience:

15+ years of related work experience, primarily in the biopharmaceutical industry.
Proven management and leadership experience, including developing talent and negotiating deals to completion.


Preferred Education:

BS / BA in science, business or management.
Graduate degree and / or equivalent preferred.


Preferred Skills:

Strong executive leadership skills, communication and business partnering ability. Proven strategic thinker and experience leading complex projects.
Demonstrated achievement in initiating, negotiating, and closing strategic partnership deals.
Ability to comprehend high-level business strategy objectives and effectively develop financial analyses.
Demonstrated ability to create and manage work plans and timelines. Able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a positive, collaborative manner. Ability to work well on cross-functional basis internally and with business partners and drive for results.
Effective communication (written / oral), presentation and organization skills.
Ability to self-motivate and function independently.
Ability to demonstrate effective leadership in ambiguous and frequently changing situations.
Strong understanding of the drug development process.

Current US work authorization required.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
