Lab Supervisor / Manager at Achaogen

Position Summary:

We are seeking a proactive, highly motivated, organized and collaborative Laboratory Manager to join a dynamic team of scientists seeking to develop new cures for multi-drug resistant bacterial infections.



The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for supporting the research laboratory activities for Achaogen’s Chemistry, Biology, Analytical, and Bioanalytical laboratories located in South San Francisco.



Essential Functions:

Partner with scientists, research associates and leadership to understand the needs of the laboratory.
Proactively identify and resolve laboratory problems by consulting with internal scientific staff, research management, and contracted vendor organizations.
Constantly seek to improve on processes to increase laboratory efficiency.
Maintain laboratory equipment performance by arranging equipment preventative maintenance visits, instrument calibration, service, and repair or replacement at the request of internal scientific staff.
Act as interface between information technology and laboratory functions for instrument-specific software and system applications.
Maintain laboratory supplies in collaboration with internal scientific staff and contracted vendor organizations.
Maintain laboratory reagents in collaboration with internal scientific staff.
Maintain the Achaogen compound collection by dispensing chemicals and preparing solutions, on an as-needed basis and coordinating compound inventory.
Maintain safety and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops.
Contribute to team efforts and results by accomplishing tasks as needed and efficiently.
Coordinate and maintain laboratory safety procedures including biohazardous and chemical waste management.
Follow all established laboratory procedures, scheduling, safety, and equipment maintenance.
Support R&D staff in the development of materials and equipment necessary for ongoing research and development.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

A minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory support roles.
Experience in a biomedical science or biomedical engineering research environment.
Experience in the handling of chemical reagents and biologically active samples; knowledge of current safety and handling standards
Hands-on experience with chromatographic, spectroscopic and physical testing instrumentation.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Effective computer skills including the use of barcoded vials / scanners.
Careful attention to and an eye for detail.
Excellent organization skills.

Preferred Education:

BS / BA in science.
