Scientist II/Sr. Scientist, Microbiology at Achaogen

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for leading all microbiology aspects of Achaogen’s research programs including overseeing MIC screening, assay development, mechanisms of action and resistance, in vitro pharmacodynamics (time-kill, post-antibiotic effect) and in vivo efficacy. The successful applicant will serve as the microbiology lead on multiple discovery stage programs and project teams and will be broadly experienced in all aspects of antibiotic discovery research from assay setup/development through design of IND enabling studies. This position will work closely with the Director of Microbiology as well as team members from Chemistry and other Biology disciplines to shape the direction of Achaogen’s research efforts while making major contributions in the lab to advance our programs.



Essential Functions:

Represent the Microbiology function at Research Program Project and Core Team meetings while setting department priorities and making project level strategic decisions.
Provide in-depth technical expertise related to the genetic and/or biochemical basis of bacterial resistance to small molecule antibiotics.
Design, conduct, and report data from key internal and external studies to support Achaogen’s antibiotic research programs. Efforts will include approximately 50% hands-on time in the lab with a primary focus on solving complex scientific problems for our small molecule antibacterial programs while taking responsibility for scientific integrity of all data generated by Research Microbiology.
Review and improve research microbiology assay protocols and approaches to data acquisition, processing and reporting.
As discovery programs advance, the successful applicant will work with the Director of Microbiology on development of content for IND enabling microbiology packages including selection of CROs, design of and responsibility for completion of outsourced research and drafting of IND sections.
Participate in and contribute to the generation and assessment of ideas for new discovery research programs.
Work with the Director of Microbiology to develop the research microbiology budget and resourcing plan.


Preferred Experience:

5 years post-doctoral or 10 years post-masters/baccalaureate level research microbiology experience in a pharmaceutical/biotechnology drug discovery environment.
Expertise in drug discovery with previous contributions to clinical candidate selection and INDs strongly preferred.
Ability to develop and deliver clear and concise presentations for both internal meetings and external conferences.
Demonstrated expertise in a related scientific discipline though a strong scientific meeting abstract and publication record.
Previous management and/or mentorship experience.


Preferred Education:

PhD preferred, but MS or BS with equivalent experience in Microbiology or similar discipline are also encouraged to apply.
